A multi-agency search was mounted yesterday, Sunday,
after a swimmer in the River Segura failed to surface.
A call to the emergency services, II2, at 4.40pm, reported that a man had
entered the river at the Cañado de Bayo, on the outskirts of Calasparra, but
had not resurfaced.
A search was mounted involving officers from the local Civil Protection, local
police, the Guardia Civil and Fire Service and a helicopter was called to
assist but to no avail.
The Water Board was also contacted in order to take measures to reduce the flow
of the river at the point where the man had disappeared in order to reduce the
risk of him being carried away by the current.
Volunteers from the local Canoe Club also joined the search.
By nightfall the search was called off due bad light but was due to resume this
morning.
