EU Citizens residents in Calasparra are being denied the right to vote in the regional elections today.
I have checked and double checked the electoral information and it is confusing. I used official information from an official site, which indicated that EU citizens resident in Spain have the right to vote in the regionals.
Today I have spoken to the Town Hall and it seems that when EU citizens receive their voting papers they had to register «their intention to vote» with the regional government before April 26.
As I explained to the Town Hall many residents did not receive any voting papers at all making this an impossible exercise. Also, presumably, this information would be in Spanish and many EU residents do not speak Spanish.
On the official sites the information is that EU citizens must register to vote. But if you have a «padron» in Calasparra, this represents registering to vote and gives you the right to vote in the municipal elections. Not so with the regional elections apparently.
This lack of clear information for EU residents in Calasparra means many will be disenfranchised for the regional elections today (sepia envelope).
Nexonr endeavours to inform readers accurately and we apologise unreservedly for the confusion and the distress which may be caused by the inability to vote in the regional elections today.
But remember you can still vote in the municipal elections and have your say in how your town is run.
