THIRD HOTTEST AUGUST FOR 50 YEARS

August in the region of Murcia was the third driest and hottest for 50 years with an average temperature of 26.8 degrees centigrade, some 1.5 degrees hotter than the reference period 1971 to 2000 according to the state meteorological centre.
High temperatures were recorded on an elevated number of days during August and the observatory in Murcia reports 13 days with temperatures on or above 36 degrees centigrade, a record only superseded in August 1994.
The observatory in Alcantarilla registered nine days with maximum temperatures of 37 degrees centigrade or more.
The minimum temperatures in August were above average except on days 11 and 13 which were recorded as “cold”. Three heat waves affected the region around days 7, 14 and 26.
