All three local political parties have suspended their election campaigns following the earthquake that shook the centre of Lorca yesterday afternoon killing at least 10 people, injuring hundreds and leaving some 20,000 people sleeping on the streets.
Electioneering all over Spain has been postponed in solidarity with the victims of Lorca including in Madrid.
Two tremors of between 4 and 5.2 on the Richter scale shook the centre of Lorca at 5pm and 7pm yesterday. At least 10 people were killed by falling debris as buildings collapsed around the main street and last night emergency services were carrying out a house to house search for victims. Some of the injuries are reported to be “very grave” and the death toll is expected to rise.
