Dodging the showers was one of the main activities this Easter as the plucky Calasparrians literally rescued the fiestas by turning out onto the streets armed with umbrellas and plastic covers for the statues of the Saints.
Rain normally means everything comes to a standstill in Calasparra but apparently not at Easter! Local residents seemed determined that all the practices and all the preparations would not go to waste and the majority of the processions went ahead despite threatening skies and heavy showers.
There were tears in many other parts of Spain as processions were cancelled wholesale but here the bars were heaving and the streets were lined with expectant spectators for the magnificent parades, which have been recognized as “of national interest to tourism.”
Some photographic memories of the processions on Good Friday and Easter Sunday are featured with this article.
