As part of a national campaign to cut down the amount of plastic in our environment all local shops of businesses have been issued with an notice obliging them to charge a minimum of one euro for plastic bags given to their customers from July 1.
All businesses in Calasparra are expected to obey the instructions to charge for plastic bags, which lasts many lifetimes contaminating our oceans and our countryside.
The ideal would be for customers to carry their own bags. There are simple cloth bags, which fold up small enough to go in any handbag and most supermarkets sell «big bags» which can be used many times.
Whatever happened to the string bag? I remember it well because it used to snag my tights, as did straw baskets. However, times change and here in Calasparra it´s too hot for tights and we all have brown legs anyway.
So bring on the creative suggestions and ideas to avoid single use plastic. For example, I will be investing in a large reusable tupperware container to take to the butchers for my weekly meat order and I always take a box or two in the car in order to transfer my supermarket shopping straight from the trolley into the car. I have also bought a water filter jug so I don´t have to buy bottled water in plastic bottles.
