For the first time in Spanish political history a vote of censure, this time on Rajoy, now ex President of Spain, has passed through Congress with a comfortable majority.
The vote of censure, presented by Pedro Sanchez, leader of the PSOE Socialist Party, was supported unconditionally by Podemos from the word go. However, within a few days support gathered and yesterday the Basque Independent Party, the PNV, added their five votes to give Sanchez a majority.
The only way Rajoy could have saved his government was by resigning, as the censure vote was against him and not his party, the PP. However, he refused to resign claiming: he had «done nothing wrong.»
However, a judicial decision found he had been an «unreliable witness» in procceedings for corruption against former members of regional and national members of his party. The decision, in the «Gurtel» case also indicated that the PP used a system of shadow accounting, financed by bribes from companies bidding for public contracts, which was also used to make ex gratia payments to members of the party and for election expenses.
Sanchez will probably be invested as President tomorrow, after an audience with the King, and a new chapter begins.
