INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY IN CALASPARRA

Some 200 residents met in the Plaza de la Corredera to hear the Reading of the Manifesto, organised by the .local Department of Equality.
The Head of the Culture, Education and Tourism Department, Teresa Garcia, was in charge of the message of the day and she was clear: women suffer an unjust inequality in many ambits, including work, they are subject to sexual harassment, domestic violence, discrimination and violence.
While over five million women in Spain joined the General Strike, called to coincide with International Women ´s Day, at the local High school 20% of staff and 75% of the pupils withdrew their labour for the day.
A photo of a mass rally in Bilboa, one of many Spanish cities with mass demonstrators yesterday, has made the front page of the New York Times.
The first General Strike by Women yesterday has been proclaimed as “historic” by many commentators.
They will all agree with the words or four own Teresa Garcia. “It’s time to say enough is enough.”
