The Mayor of Calasparra, Jose Velez, has shown his public support for the farmers and small holders who use irrigation water from Tajo Segura Water Transfer and will attend the protest in Madrid.
There has been a standing agreement for a transfer of irrigation water from the river Tajo to the River Segura for farmers in Calasparra and Cieza. However, last year the transfer was stopped due to a lack of water at source and the Segura Water Board has effectively closed the tap on farmers drastically reducing water in the irrigation channels.
The position of the Mayor with reference to the protest in Madrid on March is clear: “This day I will be with the farmers and small holders, and especially with those from Calasparra. I will be in Madrid with the sector which generates the greater part of the wealth of our region.”
Some 600 people from Calasparra and Cieza are expected to attend the demonstration.
Buses will leave Calasparra from the Fuente de Secano at 6am on Marchy 7. Anyone interested in attending can call 689602246 or 649994767.
