CALASPARRA LOSES 90% OF EARLY FRUIT CROP

Calasparra and Cieza have been worst affected by the freezing temperatures last week, which have wiped out the extra early varieties of peaches, nectarines and doughnut peaches.
Fruit farmers are reporting 90% losses which, they claim, are partly due to the lack of irrigation water to spray and thus  protect the flowers.
The Head of the regional Department of Water, Agriculture and Fish, Francisco Jodar, visited the two areas affected this week and announced a provisional estimate of the losses of 25 million euros.
The lowest temperatures were recorded last Saturday at six or seven below zero, just after higher temperatures had brought on early flowering.
