The dreams of exhibiting the black spheres, which fell from outer space and landed in Calasparra, have been dashed as the US Air Force has reclaimed its “property.”
The spheres fell out of the sky just a year ago, three of them in local areas including the Molino and Villa Vieja, and were removed and held in the cusoty of the Guardia Civil.
The Guardia Civil took the space balls, which also landed in Mula and Hellin, to the National Professional Training Centre in Cartagena where they were examined, identified, and temporarily stored.
The spheres were identified as fuel tanks from an Amercian space craft, probably the Atlas V, but it was considered unlikely that the US Air Force would reclaim them.
In the meantime, the Mayor of Calasparra, José Velez officially applied for the space spheres which fell in Calasparra, to be returned to the Town Hall where they could be mounted in a special exhibition as a tourist attraction.
The BBC came to Calasparra this spring and made a film for the BBC2 programme, Nature´s Wierdest Events, which was shown in November this year. The ten minute ítem, which includes an interview with the Mayor of Calasparra, will be show now BBC World at a future date. It was hoped the BBC film would form part of the local exhibition.
However, now it seems the balls will not be returned to Calasparra.
According to the Mayor of Calasparra: “We have done everything in our power to have the space junk returned to Calasparra, but the Government Delegate advises us it is very difficult this will happen as the owners have reclaimed them.”
