TODAY AND TOMORROW OFFICIAL DAYS OF MOURNING IN CALASPARRA

Calasparra Town Hall has declared today and tomorrow official days of mourning, all official activities will be suspended and the flags will fly at half mast for the two young Calasparrians who died and the three who were injured in the worst road traffic accident for five years in the Murcia region.

The accident, which happened yesterday morning at 6.45 on the road connecting Calasparra with the Venta de Olivas, cost the lives of five young men between the ages of 20 and 35. Among the dead were two young men from Fortuna.

Last night hospital sources announced that one of the Calasparrians injured in the accident was in a “grave” condition with internal and chest injuries. He was transferred to a special unit, Morales Meseguer, in Murcia. His two companions are reported to be “progressing favourably” in the hospital in Cieza.

The five young men from Calasparra were travelling to work on a construction site in Almansa, Albacete, when their works van was involved in a frontal collision with a Mercedes Saloon travelling in the opposite direction. Two young men from Fortuna who were travelling in the Mercedes died and the driver was seriously injured.

Jesús Navarro, the Mayor of Calasparra, speaking on Radio Calasparra said the tragedy had stunned the local community.

“All we can do now is hope that the injured men recover well and offer comfort to the families who have been destroyed and who are living through some terrible moments,” he said.

Since the accident the Mayor has been making regular announcements on Radio Calasparra to keep the community up to date with the progress of the injured.

The funeral of the two local fatalities will take place at the Merced Church at 5pm tonight.
