The new international airport at Corvera will open next spring and will operate alongside the San Javier airport during a “transition period,” according to the regional Department of Public Works and Ordination of the Territory.
The announcement came as the Department announced a 2.9% rise in its budget for next year to 120 million euros: 70 million for regional investment and 44 million for the restitution of housing and infrastructures destroyed in Lorca by the earthquake.
Some 370 million euros will also be invested in prevention systems and strategies relating to the risk of earthquakes in the area.
Investment in infrastructures will include 10 million euros to repair roads in Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras destroyed by the earthquake and the floods in September this year. These include the RM-D7, RM-D9, RM-D11, RM-D12, RM-C14 and RM C-22 at a cost of three million euros; and the rehabilitation of the RM-621 and repairs to the RM-D8, at an estimated 3.15 and 1.35 million euros respectively.
